General information about jobs in Icelandic agriculture

There are about 4000 farms in Iceland of which 85% have agriculture as a main occupation. Most farmers follow mixed farming, i.e. keep cattle and sheep, where as a considerable number of farmers keep either species. An average herd of cattle and a flock of sheep on an Icelandic farm numbers 20 dairy cows and 120-250 sheep. Many farmers also keep 5 - 10 Icelandic horses.

The haymaking season lasts from the latter part of June till the end of August, depending on the weather.
Icelandic agriculture is highly mechanised. Farmers hire farm hands most commonly during the months of June to September.

There are not so many horse farms in Iceland, but most farmers have horses for domestic use, so that one can take a ride during
leisure hours. Please remember to bring the
E-104 papers from your health insurance.

Note that people intending to stay for three months or more have better opportunities to get work on Icelandic farms.

Keep diseases out!

In order to protect horses in Iceland from contagious diseases it is by law prohibited to bring into the country used saddles,
girtles, bridles and other riding equipment. Clothes and boots for riding abroad should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected before brought to Iceland.
