Working on an Icelandic farm?
- Citizens from outside the EEA
If you are a citizen from outside the EEA you must obtain a work permit before entering the country!
Please note that it is not possible to apply for a work permit for foreigners who have arrived in Iceland
as tourists unless they first depart from the country! |
"A foreigner who comes to Iceland shall have a valid passport and a visa if applicable. If the intention is to remain for more
than three months, an application for a residence permit must be made to the Immigration Office before arrival in Iceland. The Immigration Office replies in writing, granting or refusing a residence permit. When the residence permit is formally issued by the Immigration Office, a passport and medical certificate must be produced. If the applicant intends to work while in Iceland, a
work permit must have been issued before arrival in the country. A residence permit is necessary for the issue of a work permit; the employer makes the application for a work permit. A contract of employment must be included with the application. A residence permit grants the right to be legally domiciled in Iceland, which entails various social rights."
(From a booklet by the Ministry of Social Affairs: Information for foreigners who move to Iceland: Icelandic Society - Rights and
Obligations. 1st ed., July 1998.)
See also guidelines on residence and employment from the Embassy of Iceland, Washington DC and Visa requirements for
Iceland, from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Having obtained a work permit in one place, it
is not possible to change workplaces with the same work permit! |
It should be noted that it is often harder for people from outside the EEA
countries to obtain a job than those from countries inside EEA because of the
paperwork involved.
If you are interested in finding an Icelandic farm to work on, we suggest one of the following ways:
| Contact Nínukot, a private service for Icelandic farmers who want to hire
people from abroad. |
 |
Put a small ad in the farmers bi-weekly newspaper, Bændablaðið, which is distributed to every farm in the country. Cost: 1150 IKR.
